Write a Review“A church that cares for people”by ET
Marshall Presbyterian is a small congregation of thoughtful, faithful people who love one another through good times and bad. We don’t have a formal care committee, but individuals provide weekly transportation to church members who can’t drive, and phone calls or visits to those who can’t attend. We don’t have a formal pledge tradition, but somehow every year our budget is balanced. And in September 2024, our church building was ransacked by the flood caused by Hurricane Helene, forcing us to move our weekly worship service to a temporary home at Madison High School’s Early College. Yet as a church, we have never been stronger or more unified. We are actively supported by and support the Presbytery of Wester North Carolina (https://www.presbyterywnc.org/about-us/mission-statement-of-pwnc) and the Presbyterian Church (USA) (https://pcusa.org/). We share a sincere, strongly held conviction that our church should be open and accessible to all who want to join us. To that end, the restoration of our church building has included a number of ADA upgrades, including installing “hearing loop technology” in the sanctuary, providing at least one wheelchair accessible bathroom per floor, a lift that will provide an option to stairs between the two floors of the church, a ramp in the sanctuary up to the chancel, and an updated ramp from the church’s south-side parking lot into the kitchen. In April 2025, the session voted to join together with More Light Presbyterians to make explicit our commitment to welcome and celebrate LGBTQIA+ people within our church. When our county held its first Pride Celebration this year, Marshall Presbyterian was a sponsor of the event. Our Sunday School class for adults (“Gentle Faith”) has studied many texts that helped us (a largely white cis-gendered congregation) gain a better understanding of our privilege and our history. Some of the texts we’ve read together include: • Dialogues On: Race1 • Dialogues On: Sexuality2 • Special Issues of Presbyterian Outlook: #TrustBlackWomen; Liberating Voices: Latine, Latinx and Abya Yala These discussions have been lively and engaging. Folks are welcome to explore and learn with us.
Attendee Tips
The church sanctuary has been restored, the rest of the building is still in process. So we only have Sunday worship at 11am, no Sunday School yet. Watch our website for community events being held, AA, NA, and other organizations being housed in the completed church.
